Wenning named new SHS principal

The Cheatham County School District has named Dawn Wenning as the new Sycamore High School principal.

Wenning, who is currently the principal at Kingston Springs Elementary School, will replace Dr. Amy McWhirter, who will retire and work part time as the district’s RTI coordinator.

Wenning earned her bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education English from Welch College (formerly Free Will Baptist Bible College in Nashville) in 1994.

She received her Special Education endorsement from Tennessee State University in 2001 and Masters in Educational Leadership from Austin Peay State University in 2012.

Wenning has been in the education field for 23 years.

She spent three years at Metro Christian Academy, teaching third grade and middle school English.
Wenning has been with Cheatham County Schools for 19 years. She started in 1998 as a special education teacher at Cheatham County Central High School and then moved to the English Department to teach English I until 2005.

Her family moved to Florence, Ala., and she taught seventh and eighth grade English for one year at Florence Christian Academy.

Wenning returned to Cheatham County in 2007 to begin teaching in the English Department at Sycamore High School before becoming the academic specialist at Pegram Elementary School in 2015. She was named the KSES principal in 2017.

She is married to Steve Wenning, the principal at Cheatham County Central High School.

"I am thrilled to continue my journey in education by being able to come home to Sycamore High School. I am so thankful for the opportunity to serve and work in the community where I live,” Wenning said.

She added: “Sycamore holds a very special place in my heart because that's where Steve and I taught when we returned from Alabama back in 2007. Our oldest son Sean is a 2018 graduate of SHS, and our son Avery will be a freshman there in the fall. I look forward to renewing relationships with former colleagues and meeting all of the new staff members that have been added to the faculty in the four years that I have been away.”

A meet and greet for the Sycamore community to welcome Wenning and new assistant principal Adrian Baker will be held Wednesday, May 1 from 5-6 p.m.
