South Cheatham school update

The Cheatham County School District and Cheatham County Mayor Bill Anderson are discussing a proposal to combine Pegram Elementary School and Kingston Springs Elementary School into one new elementary school beginning with the 2027-28 school year.

The proposal is designed to bring together the two South Cheatham schools while strengthening educational opportunities and support services for students.

The Cheatham County School Board will discuss the proposal at a workshop on Thursday, October 29 at 6 p.m. at the Ashland City Elementary STEM Academy cafeteria, 108 Elizabeth Street in Ashland City.

"This proposal is centered on our students. A combined school would allow us to strengthen support for every learner while using our resources wisely. Our goal is simple: to give every child in South Cheatham the very best we have to offer,” said Director of Schools Stacy Brown.

District leaders emphasized that no final decision has been made and that community input will play an important role in the process.

If approved, students would remain at their current schools throughout the 2026-27 school year, with the new unified elementary school opening in the 2027-28 school year.

Under the proposal:

* Students would complete the current school year at their existing schools with familiar teachers and staff.

* A Transition Committee made up of parents, staff, students, and community members would help guide the process.

* The district and Mayor Anderson are discussing the possibility of converting the current Pegram Elementary School building into a public library, creating additional resources for South Cheatham families.

* The district would provide ongoing communication regarding future decisions, including information related to transportation, enrollment, and staffing.

Should the proposal move forward, community forums will be scheduled at both schools to provide additional information and answer questions from families and residents.
